INFANT PROGRAM

Abacus Montessori House provides quality care for infants beginning at 8 weeks in a physical environment that is safe, healthy, aesthetic, and clean. The caregivers understand human growth and development, and are nurturing and loving. When a child begins walking steadily around 15-18 months he/she will graduate into the toddler program.

Our program is housed in a beautifully renovated home for small learners, as well as their adult caregivers. All furniture is scaled to the size of the children. This is truly a child’s atmosphere.

The infant community comprises several different areas: the sleep and physical care area, the movement and dining area, and an outdoor area. In the sleep and physical area each infant has his/her own crib until they turn one when they will sleep on floor mats.

The movement area is where the child spends the majority of the day. In this area the child is given “freedom of the floor” to enhance opportunities to learn trough their senses: watching, hearing, touching, reaching, grasping, tasting, and moving.

Connected to the movement area is the dinning area which is made up of a communal dining table and either infant chairs for young babies just learning to sit or low slatted chairs for children who are more experienced with sitting. Every child is on his own schedule, allowing each child to establish his or her own rhythms for eating, sleeping, and exploring.

Outdoor exploration is another important aspect of the infant program. Children who can walk explore the grounds on foot, while younger classmates see the world from a stroller.

A quote from Dr. Sivana Montanaro, MD and AMI infant teacher trainer, “We should not look at newborn infants as small, helpless human being, but as persons who are small in size, but with an immense mental capacity, and many physical abilities that cannot be witnessed unless the environment assist in the expression pf life.”

Child development experts agree that the need is critical for infant programs that will provide both a nurturing environment and the appropriate opportunities for children to develop their brains to their fullest potential. Abacus Montessori House infant program meets that need.
