Primary Summer Camp Themes 2008

The Human Body June 9 – 13
Campers will explore the systems of the human body and how they work. We will learn about digestion and the importance of healthy eating, fitness and habits of hygiene: tooth brushing and bathing. We will discover our circulation system, find our pulse and count our heart rate. We will investigate respiration and how plants and animals work together for survival! This week will include a bike day to emphasize fitness!

Solar System June 16-20
During this session, campers will delve into our solar system. What do we know about the planets, the sun, rockets and constellations? Our learning will go as far as these young wondering minds will take us! Each child will have the opportunity to create of a space shuttle model of their own.

Weather/Seasons June 23 – 27
Why do the days get shorter? What makes the weather in Michigan so crazy? Why are leaves green? Children are so curious about the world around them. This session will include experiments, games and demonstrations to help children understand the seasons and why our weather is what it is here in Michigan! We will even explore snow in June! Children will each have the opportunity to make their own tornado to bring home.

Celebration of our Country June 30 – July 3
Three Cheers for the Red, White and Blue! Children will learn patriotic songs, cook foods of the pioneer days, and learn about “The fifty Nifty United States”. We will experiment with fire work art and end our week with a Fourth of July parade down our street!

The Planet Earth- Land Air Water- Continents July 7 – 11
What's inside the Earth? This session will include poems and puzzles about the continents, exploring the phases of the moon, study of land and water formations and a look into the eruptions of volcanoes!

Magnets and Matter- Solid/Liquid/Gas- July 14- 18
Preschool scientists will learn about and compare and contrast the properties of matter. Exploration with a variety of liquids and solids will help them to draw their own conclusions! Magnets fascinate young children. This week, we will explore metal and non metal, navigate through an obstacle course with magnet, create metal drawings, and make a needle compass!

Crazy Critters July 21 – 25
What is the difference between a mammal and a reptile? Reptile and amphibian? How are birds similar to amphibians? Throughout this session we will engage your child with animal facts, habitat awareness and exploration and lots of outside fun. Mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, children love to learn about all kinds of animals, from what they eat to where they sleep.

Five Senses July 28 – August 1
Fun with your five senses! Learn how to magnify your hearing, how smell and taste are related, and how your taste buds really work. Make smelly play dough, learn some sign language and taste your own kitchen creations. Children will fine tune their senses with our smelling bottles and sound cylinders.

Rain Forest Rendezvous August 4 – 8
Join us as we recreate the rainforest in our classroom. Children will explore the various layers and learn about animals and plants from the rainforest floor to the emergent layer! Children this age love to learn about animals- we will talk about endangered animals of the world, and what we can do the help- RECYCLE!

Dinosaurs August 11 – 15
Your little paleontologist will have the opportunity to dig fossils and make one of their own. We will look at the prehistoric timeline and just when the dinosaurs lived. Children love to learn the names of all the dinosaurs. There will be plenty of books for learning! For snack, we will make dinosaur eggs in a nest. YUM!
